Teachers who are already working in a classroom can earn their teaching license with Elon's Alternative Pathways to Teaching (APT) program. Details...
Classroom teachers who need to earn their teaching license will be able to complete the necessary coursework in two years or less with Elon University’s Alternative Pathways to Teaching (APT) program. The program offers certification in three areas: elementary education, secondary education and special education.
The Elon APT program is specifically designed for lateral entry teachers who are already teaching in a classroom setting, but lack the specific training required for a North Carolina teaching license. APT offers evening courses during the traditional school year, augmented by a summer schedule of classes. Classroom instruction focuses on behavior management, instructional planning and courses specific to the individual’s teaching field. Students also have a chance to apply what they have learned, working on field-based assignments under the supervision of teacher education faculty members.
In addition to preparing students for the licensure examination, the APT program’s variety of undergraduate and graduate level courses allows students to get a head start on a master’s degree.
Interested students should contact the teacher education department at the Elon University School of Education at (336) 278-5900 for more information.
