The Elon University Board of Trustees met on campus March 12-13 and took the following actions:

  • Installed three new Board members: Philip D. Ameen, New Canaan, Conn., vice president and comptroller of General Electric; John R. Danieli, Norwell, Mass., CEO of Computer Merchants, Ltd.; and The Honorable Jeanette Hyde, Raleigh, N.C., former U.S. ambassador to seven Eastern Caribbean countries. Thomas M. Bolton III was elected to a two-year term as youth trustee.
  • Reappointed to the Board Noel L. Allen ’69; Barbara D. Bass ’61; Sherrill G. Hall ’55; Michele S. Hazel ’78; Maurice N. Jennings, Jr.; Jack R. Lindley, Sr. ’56; Frank R. Lyon ’71; and Richard L. Thompson ’64
  • Reelected Noel Allen as board chair and Zachary T. Walker III ’60 as vice chair
  • Elected Iris M. Coupland trustee emeritus
  • Heard reports on:

    • SACS and NCAA accreditation findings and upcoming NCATE visit
    • New and renovated facilities for arts and sciences and program planning for the Ernest Koury, Sr. Business Center
    • The Elon University Fellows programs
    • Planned giving

  • Approved a $79.75 million budget for 2002-2003. The cost of attending Elon (tuition, fees, room, and board) will be $20,595, a 6% increase.
  • Promoted Dr. James S. Bissett, Dr. A. Victoria Fischer, and Dr. Janet L. Warman to professor and Dr. Jonathan W. Berry, Dr. Michael B. Kingston, Dr. Yoram Lubling, Dr. Douglas B. Redington, Dr. Karl D. Sienerth, Dr. Carolyn B. Stuart, Dr. Deborah Thurlow Long, Dr. Maureen O. Vandermaas-Peeler, and Jane C. Wellford to associate professor. Dr. Berry, Dr. Anne Bolin, Dr. Mary Jo Festle, Dr. Kingston, Dr. Lubling, Dr. Sienerth, Dr. Long, and Dr. Vandermaas-Peeler were granted tenure. President Lambert awarded professional status to Dr. Redington, Dr. Stuart, and Professor Wellford.
