Branson named finalist for academic hall of fame

Four finalists will be chosen for induction at ceremonies in New York City June 27. Branson joins select company on the list of finalists, which includes baseball player Rick Cerone (Seton Hall University), basketball players Mike Gminski (Duke University) and John Stockton (Gonzaga University), and swimmer Susan Walsh (University of North Carolina).

Branson was selected as Elon’s most valuable player in men’s basketball during the 1987-88 season. He was named first team Academic All-America that season and was subsequently chosen as the Academic All-America of the Year in all sports nationally.

Branson earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Elon in 1987, then completed his MBA degree in 1988 during his final playing season. He had a 4.0 GPA in both his undergraduate and graduate work and was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Chi honor societies.

Branson led Elon to a conference championship during the 1987-88 season, averaging 16.6 points per game. He was selected as the conference player of the year honors that season and also earned the Basnight Award as Elon’s top male athlete of the year. He was inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
