Cunningham to receive ROTC award

Cunningham will be one of about 250 cadets nationwide to receive the award, presented to the most outstanding Army ROTC cadet at each college and university across the nation which offers ROTC.

Cunningham will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of national security issues during the seminar. Prominent national and military leaders lead roundtable discussions which focus on issues such as NATO, the Persian Gulf, terrorism and their relationship to national security.

A native of Carlisle, Pa., Cunningham is Cadet Battalion Commander in the ROTC program at North Carolina A&T State University, which offers the program in cooperation with Elon. A two-year ROTC scholarship recipient, Cunningham will receive his commission as a second lieutenant in May.

George Marshall served as general of the U.S. Army and chief of staff during World War II. He was secretary of state from 1947-49 and secretary of defense from 1950-51. His plan for European recovery following World War II became known as the Marshall Plan. He received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1953.
