Academic leaders from nine universities gathered at Elon Oct. 29-30 along with New York businessman Eugene Lang to discuss Project Pericles, promoting social responsibility and citizenship in higher education. Details…
Lang, founder and chairman emeritus of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation, is leading the planning for Project Pericles. Elon President Leo M. Lambert is chair of the President’s Council, and Elon is among the ten participating colleges and universities.
Pericles was an ancient Athenian statesman who championed democracy. The objective of Project Pericles is to encourage colleges and universities to provide, as a regular and recognized part of their educational missions, a total learning experience in the classroom, on the campus and in the community that, among its values, instills in students an active and abiding sense of social responsibility and the conviction that the processes and institutions of our democracy offer each person an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a better world.
Project Pericles has collaborative relationships with Campus Compact, the Children’s Defense Fund, the Council of Independent Colleges and the “I Have A Dream” Foundation.
