Elon staff member carries Olympic Torch

Tara Morlando, director of residence life operations and information management, was a torchbearer during the Olympic Torch relay Dec. 6 in Charlotte, N.C. Details...

Morlando is one of about 11,500 torchbearers to carry the Olympic Torch during its journey to Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Each runner will carry the torch approximately two-tenths of a mile during its 46 state, 13,500 mile trip.

Morlando’s run with the torch took place at 7 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6 in downtown Charlotte.

A national selection committee screened applicants for the torch relay, identifying inspirational people as potential torchbearers. Morlando, who was nominated by her mother, fights the chronic fatigue associated with Epstein-Barr syndrome. She was diagnosed with the condition last year.

“How I feel has not prevented me from doing all that I have done,” says Morlando. “My syndrome will never affect my determination or will; no syndrome will take that away.”
