Elon students produce special Times-News sections

Eighteen journalism students from fall semester JCM 425 class have produced articles for four special sections of the Burlington Times-News for the Feb. 17 and Feb. 24 editions. Details...

Students worked with three editors from the Times-News in the process of producing the articles. Each student wrote three stories on a variety of articles related to progress in Alamance County. The sections that ran this week were Section F, Business, and Section G, Lifestyles. Two more sections will run next week.

The students who wrote for the paper included the following:

Jaya Martin, 21, is a senior journalism major from Gibsonville, N.C., who hopes to pursue law school in her post-graduate studies. She enjoys writing, traveling and watching movies. Jaya is also a reporter for The Pendulum, the Elon student newspaper, and has studied abroad in London and Ghana.

Annie Reilly, 21, is a junior from Salisbury, N.C., majoring in journalism and international studies. She is an intern at the Greensboro News & Record and hopes to land a reporting job at a newspaper when she graduates in 2003.

Justin Mazzola, 21, is a senior from Keene, N.H., majoring in journalism and broadcast communications. He was the sports editor for The Pendulum and is an aspiring poet. After graduation, he plans to join Americorps for a year before pursuing a career with Men’s Health magazine.

Mandie Danielski, 21, is a senior English major, journalism minor from Long Island, N.Y. She studied abroad in London and has interned with Fidelity Investments in New York and with City-County Magazine in Burlington. She plans to attend graduate school next year for professional writing to become a college professor.

Jessica Rivelli, 20, is a senior from Tampa, Fla. She is a double major in broadcast communications and journalism. She currently works at WFMY-TV as an assignment editor and hopes to continue in television news after graduating in 2002.

Christopher Rash, 21, is a senior journalism major from Laurel, Md. He is applying to the Adcenter at Virginia Commonwealth University in the hopes of earning his master’s degree in advertising account management. One day he wants to own his own advertising agency.

Jennifer Guarino, 21, is a junior from Lewisville, N.C., majoring in journalism. She is the editor of The Pendulum, Elon’s student newspaper. She is a youth member of the National PTA Board of Directors. After graduation, she hopes to work as an education reporter for a newspaper.

Kate Botty, 22, is a senior from Wilton, Conn., majoring in journalism. She is a reporter for The Pendulum, the Elon University student newspaper and spent a year abroad at the University of Sussex, in Brighton, England. Kate wants to eventually earn a master’s degree in international communications.

Suzanne George, 21, is from Greer, S.C. She is majoring in journalism, broadcast and corporate communications. She was the new member coordinator for her sorority – Zeta Tau Alpha – and has studied abroad in Australia. She plans to move to New York City to begin a career in public relations after her graduation this May.

Crystal Allen, 20, is a journalism major and international studies minor from Richmond, Va. Crystal has studied abroad in Ghana and participated in a research project about the societal effects of the Internet. She will graduate in May 2003 and hopes to pursue a career in magazine journalism.

Leanda Gahegan, 21 is a journalism major and a non-violence minor from Charlotte, N.C. She has done research on the American underground press and plans to do research on gender linguistics in the spring. After graduation in May 2002, Leanda hopes to work for a non-profit organization. She enjoys crocheting, writing and cooking.

Audrey Seagraves, 22, is a senior from Gainesville, Ga., majoring in journalism and broadcast communications. She is participating in an internet study for the student undergraduate research forum which will be displayed in the spring. She spent a semester studying in Perth, Australia. Audrey hopes to travel the world after graduation. Eventually, she would like to work for a non-profit organization.

Morgan Chase, 21, is a senior at Elon University. She is majoring in journalism and has a minor in art. Morgan teaches swimming and lifeguards at the local YMCA. She will be interning at Greenough Communications in Boston this January. Following graduation in May, 2001, She hopes to be writing for a travel magazine or working in public relations.

Lee Serafini, 21, is from Doylestown, Pa., and is majoring in journalism and broadcast communications. He has worked for the Times-News for two years covering such events as the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament, U.S. Women’s Open (golf), Carolina Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes games. After college, he plans to be a sports columinst for a national newspaper as well as appear on television sports talk shows.

Becca Lestner, 20, is a junior journalism major from Baltimore. She has recently completed an ad layout internship with the Times-News. Becca enjoys traveling, and visited Israel last year with Birthright Israel International. She plans to pursue a career in magazine journalism in New York City after graduating in 2003.

Jessica Vitak, 21, is a senior journalism and communications major from Baltimore. She is currently the managing editor at The Pendulum, Elon’s newspaper, and managed WSOE, Elon’s radio station, last year. Jessica plans to attend graduate school in New York City next year for magazine journalism.

Steve Dignan, 21, is a journalism and broadcast communications double-major at Elon University. He is a native of Greensboro, N.C., and hopes to pursue a career in health care after expected graduation in May 2002.

Lauren Reinalda, 21, of Barrington, R.I., is a junior journalism major who plans to lead wilderness trips for a few years after she graduates, then begin writing for an outdoor or travel magazine.
