Elon’s Hurricane Floyd Relief Plan

Elon Volunteers! and the Chaplain's office are coordinating several hurricane relief efforts. Read this E-note for full details.

(1) Food and Paper Products. Elon Volunteers! is collecting needed items to be distributed through church agencies in Eastern North Carolina. Water, diapers, toilet paper, paper towels, and canned foods are especially needed. Collection boxes are located in the campus dining facilities, residential area offices and in the Alamance Rotunda and Moseley Center.

(2) Cash Donations. United Way of North Carolina has been asked by Gov. Jim Hunt to coordinate fund collection and distribution. Checks made payable to “Hurricane Floyd Relief Fund” may be sent to the Chaplain’s Office at CB 2960. They will be forwarded to United Way of North Carolina.

Volunteers Needed – Contact Elon Volunteers! if you are interested in helping to coordinate, collect or distribute items. Elon Volunteers! is located in Moseley 230 or call 584-2102.

Football Fundraiser – During the Elon Football Game vs NC A&T on Sept. 25, students will be collecting canned goods and monetary gifts to help flood victims. Canned goods will be given to local church collection points. Money will be presented to the United Way of North Carolina through the Alamance County office of United Way.

Elon Families Affected – Please notify the Elon College Chaplain’s Office (584-2409) if you know of any student, faculty or staff families that were directly affected by this disaster. Contributions to Elon families in need can be made through checks payable to the “Chaplain’s Discretionary Fund” and sent to CB 2960.

Help Animals – The campus chapter of the Sierra Club will be collecting pet food for pets affected by the disaster. A collection box is available in the Moseley Center or you may contact Emily Waschak, Elon Sierra Chapter co-coordinator, at 586-6232.

Work Teams – Once the floodwaters have receded, Elon Volunteers! will be organizing work teams to help in the rebuilding process in cooperation with the Governor’s Emergency Management Office. Faculty and staff advisors are needed for Fall Break and weekend trips. Contact Elon Volunteers! at 584 -2102.

College and Universities in Distress [in progress] – Work teams will be organized to assist students and colleagues at affected institutions in clean up and recovery operations.

Additional Agencies That Will Accept Donations:
American Red Cross – The Triangle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is collecting donations. Checks may be sent to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 14405, Raleigh, NC 27610. To contribute by phone, call 1-800-HELP-NOW (1-800-435-7669).

Church World Service/CROP – Carolinas Crop Office will use cash donations to distribute “Gift of the Heart” recovery kits: 1006 Lamond Avenue, Durham, NC 27701. To contribute by phone, call 1 800 297-1516 Extension 222.

Catholic Relief Services – Checks may be sent to Catholic Social Ministries, Flood Relief, Diocese of Raleigh, 715 Nazareth St., Raleigh, NC 27606-2187.
