National French Week: La Semaine du Francais
November 7-13, 2002
Whereas, The American Association of Teachers of French is celebrating November 7 through 13 as the fourth annual National French Week, and
Whereas, The study of foreign languages is a bridge to international understanding and cooperation, and the study of the French language fosters a greater appreciation for the people and culture of France and the French-speaking world; and
Whereas, The Elon chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the national French honorary society which recognizes outstanding scholarship in the French language and literature, also seeks to increase appreciation for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world by encouraging French cultural activities on campus; and
Whereas, The Elon French Club has planned a number of special events for the Elon community; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That November 7 through 13, 2002, be observed as National French Week at Elon University.
French Week Activities
Sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French, the French Club at Elon, the Elon Chapter of Pi Delta Phi and Elon’s Department of Foreign Languages
Ongoing events:
A display of French literature and cinema in the Belk Library, through November 14.
A contest: Identify famous French faces and places in Carlton’s second-floor student lounge. The winner will be announced on November 13.
Monday, November 11 through Thursday, November 14, the flags of four French-speaking countries (France, Canada, Switzerland and Monaco) will be displayed around the fountain.
Other events:
Friday, November 8, at 3:30 p.m. in the student lounge on the second floor of Carlton: a reception for alumni who were foreign language majors.
(Homecoming activities will preclude other events during the weekend.)
Monday, November 11, in the student lounge, second floor Carlton: continuous showing of extracts from a film on the French cinema.
Tuesday, November 12, at College Coffee: French pastries and croissants will be served; there will also be tables where you can practice your French or get information on French-speaking countries. At 10 a.m. there will be a drawing. Prizes include videos, gift certificates and jars of Nutella. Everyone is invited to register up until Nov. 12 at any of the following locations: the language lab in Carlton, at any French Table in the Acorn Cafe, in the library or in Moseley.
Tuesday, November 12, at 12:30 p.m. in the Acorn Cafe: French conversation table. Come practice your French with friendly professors and students.
Tuesday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m., at the home of Cait Scanlon: a fondue party!
Wednesday, November 13: The winner of the “Faces and Places” contest will be announced.
