Haggard Avenue improvement project

The Town of Elon has voted to ask the NC Department of Transportation to allow it to take control of a portion of Haggard Avenue from Williamson Avenue to Oak Avenue. Details….

If the state approves, the town and the university will plan a construction project to slow traffic on Haggard and improve pedestrian safety. A center median is planned, stretching from Williamson Avenue to O’Kelly Avenue at the McMichael Science Center. Brick crosswalks will replace the concrete paving at pedestrian crossings. Future phases of the project will extend the median east to Oak Avenue.

Haggard Avenue was formerly State Route 100. When the new Elon bypass opened, SR100 was moved north of campus. Haggard Avenue will remain open to service local traffic, and the town and university have agreed to maintain the road in the future.
