Hassell to discuss photography April 8

Hassell is a documentary photographer whose 18-year project, “The Working Spirit,” portrays the dignity of the common worker in many industries. His most recent undertaking examines coal miners in a small, isolated community in Appalachian Virginia.

Hassell’s research on the culture of coal mining is interdisciplinary, covering not only mining but topics such as music and religion. He has made a multimedia presentation that includes photographic images, recorded oral histories, music, archival video and traditional research.
