Ward Burton, a successful NASCAR driver who is a member of Elon’s class of 1985, will host a pre-race social for alumni, students, parents and friends before the Textilease/Medique 300, an ASA ACDelco series race Saturday, April 7 at South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Va.

A special $65 ticket package is available to Elon alumni and friends for the event. The ticket includes a private hospitality chalet, preferred race seating and a pre-race pit pass. Burton will answer questions and randomly select 10 guests to receive pace car rides. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the race begins at 9 p.m. Interested alumni should contact the Alumni and Parent Relations Office at 1-877-784-ELON for ticket information.

Burton began his racing career at South Boston in the mid-1980s, moving up through the track’s Late Model division before breaking into NASCAR’s Busch Series in 1990. He won four Busch races before moving on to the Winston Cup Series, stock car racing’s highest level, in 1994. He recorded his second career victory in the Mall.com 400 at Darlington, S.C. in March 2000, and he has been among the top 10 finishers in 33 races during the last two seasons.

“I have a lot of great memories from both Elon and South Boston Speedway. These institutions are responsible for much of the education I received on and off the track and have been instrumental to my success in Winston Cup,” Burton says.
