New carillon installed in Alamance building

The sound of bells returned to campus this week with the installation of a new digital carillon in the cupola of Alamance building. Details...

The new system, delivered to campus July 26, is produced by Schulmerich Bells of Sellersville, Pa. It produces sounds which have been sampled from actual cast bells.

Powered by a control panel the size of a small refrigerator, which is located on the third floor of Alamance, the carillon can be programmed to chime at selected intervals. The system also comes with approximately 125 songs and hymns which can be programmed in any sequence, and even plays the Elon fight song.

The new system replaces a carillon given to Elon by the class of 1953. The old system, which was located in the provost’s office on the first floor of Alamance, had been in disrepair for many years and parts for it were no longer available.

A committee is being formed to establish guidelines for appropriate uses of the carillon, says Mary Wise, assistant vice president for academic affairs.
