New Web servers installed

Elon’s two primary Web servers were replaced Jan. 10. The new servers are faster and more reliable and have greater capacity than the existing servers. The upgrade affects the Web pages for all faculty, staff, students and organizations. The existing pages have been moved to the new servers for you. The primary change will be in the protocol for using ftp to move future pages from your computer to the server.

For faculty and staff: We will add authentication through Active Directory for your ftp account. This means that the servername, username, and password settings that you currently use to upload your Web pages to the server will change. As a faculty or staff member, you must change the settings in your ftp program from “ftp://oak.elon.edu” to “ftp://facstaff.elon.edu”. You will also need to change the settings in your ftp program to the same username and password that you currently use for e-mail (this is your Active Directory account). Also please be aware that all faculty and staff accounts will have a 20MB quota (limit) on the new server. This means that you will not be able to upload new files or modify existing files (if you are over the limit) until you have brought your total file size down below the 20MB limit.

For students: Your pages will still be accessible online from http://www.elon.edu/student/username. However, before you will be able to use (ftp) to upload your Web pages to the server, you will need to change the settings in your ftp program from “ftp://oak.elon.edu” to “ftp://student.elon.edu”. You will also need to change the settings in your ftp program to the same username and password that you currently use for e-mail. If you need assistance to change the settings on your personal Web page, contact the Help Desk at ext. 5100. Please be aware that all student ftp accounts will have a 10MB quota (limit) on the new server. Currently users are asked to not exceed 5MB. Starting Friday at 5 p.m., you will not be able to upload new files or modify existing files (if you are over the 10MB limit) until you have brought your total file size down below that limit.
