PAGE grant awarded to biology professors

Elon has received $9,738 from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s Education and Training Program. Details...

The proposal was submitted by Drs. Helen Kruezer and Linda Niedzela, assistant professors of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The grant will ensure that all biology majors at Elon will get hands-on experience using Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technology at two different points in their academic careers. This technology will be part of several courses in Biology Department and the biochemistry course taught in Chemistry. The use of PAGE in these courses will increase students’ awareness of the central role of proteins and better prepare graduates for immediate careers in research, industry, and further education and training.

Since receiving notification of funding, Dr. Kruezer has accepted a position at the University of Utah. Funding will be used to infuse protein gel electrophoresis into the laboratory curriculum of the biology and biochemistry courses. Niedziela will take the lead on the project, which is scheduled to begin in February 2002 and end in January 2003.
