Parents Council convenes on campus

Co-Presidents are Jeb and Tammy Courtney from Midlothian, Va., parents of Jessica, who will graduate with the class of 2003. Co-Vice Presidents are Steve and Debra Leven from McKinney, Texas, parents of Julie, class of 2004.

The council heard presentations from President Leo M. Lambert, Dean Steven House, and Assistant Chaplain Kate Colussy-Estes.

The meeting also included an update and report on the current Parents Council campaign to raise $250,000 for scholarships and the Elon Fund. The Parents Council voted to name the scholarship the Mary Coolidge Ruth Scholarship in honor of Mary Ruth, director of alumni and parent relations, who will step down from her position in January to serve as a volunteer for the United Church of Christ. Members of the council broke into small groups for committee meetings related to events, development, student life, communications, admissions and career services.

Elon currently has 85 Parents Council families representing the Classes of 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Invitations to Class of 2006 parents to serve on the Parents Council will be extended by President Lambert in January, 2003.

Parents Council members traditionally host and greet at various Family Weekend activities. They wear Parents Council nametags and are available to assist visiting parents and families.
