The $850,000 health facility, which opened at the start of the school year, is named in honor of Dr. Robert N. Ellington of Burlington, N.C., who has served as Elon’s college physician for 15 years. The center’s naming recognizes his years of service as well as a main gift Dr. Ellington and his wife Helen made to the fund-raising campaign for the new building.
Located on the north side of campus near the Story Center, Loy Center and Moseley Center, the R.N. Ellington Center provides expanded modern facilities, including five medical examination rooms, a sick/observation room, rooms for triage, medications, laboratory equipment and shot administration, five counseling rooms, a group conference room, a waiting room and staff office space.
“This facility is a wonderful example of what can happen in a short period of time with extraordinary leadership,” said Leo M. Lambert, Elon president, during dedication ceremonies held outside the center. Student Government Association President Trey Bolton offered remarks, along with Larry and Dee D’Angelo, co-presidents of the Parents Council.
“There is nothing that makes me happier than to see this type of facility available to the students on this campus,” said Larry D’Angelo, a physician from Bethesda, Md.
The campaign for the center received major support from the Elon Parents Council, which raised more than $220,000 from its members. Elon trustee and alumnus Shelly Hazel, who also made a gift in support of the project, represented the Board of Trustees. During her remarks, Hazel recognized her mother, who has been a nurse for more than 60 years.
The Alamance Regional Medical Center, located in Burlington, also made a major gift to the project. Ralph Holt, Jr., chair of the Board of Directors, recognized the importance of Elon students and staff to the community.
