Students establish refugee village

Students in one Elon class established a compound Friday, Dec. 6 to bring attention to the plight of refugees in Afghanistan and around the world.

Approximately 25 students in a Global Experiences course, taught by Shawn Tucker, assistant professor of interdisciplinary arts, established the village near Young Commons on campus for their final exam in the course. They planned to rotate shifts throughout the day Friday, living in tents and braving remnants of Wednesday’s ice storm.

Students also passed out information and literature about the living conditions of refugees around the world. At the end of 2001, 4.5 million Afghans were living as refugees in other countries. Many live in squalid camps with inadequate sanitation and insufficient drinking water.
