The Isabella Cannon Centre is pleased to announce that five Elon students studying abroad for the Spring 2006 semester have received competitive national study abroad scholarships.
1) Benjamin Gilman Scholarship: This is a very prestigious award – usually more than 1,000 students apply and only about 150 are given awards. “The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia. The Gilman scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. 2) Bridging Asia Scholarship: Out of 28 national Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan, 3 were awarded to Elon students studying in Japan this spring. Elon was the only school with more than two scholarship recipients. “The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan.” – from http://www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj/Bridging/scholarships.html

3) Freeman Asia Scholarship: “In the past, there have been few funding opportunities for study abroad in Asia. However, with the generous support of the Freeman Foundation, the Institute of International Education (IIE) now administers the Freeman-ASIA Awards in order to give more American undergraduate students the means to study in East and Southeast Asia. Freeman-ASIA Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities.” – from http://www.iie.org/programs/freeman-asia/about.htm

In addition to these national scholarships, the Isabella Cannon Centre has awarded multiple need-based scholarships for the spring. A number of departments and fellows programs on campus have also made awards to students.
