Scores of projects large and small are under way to get the campus ready for fall semester. Read this note for a description of the projects and photos of the progress to date.
Academic Village pavilions I and II The Isabella Cannon International Studies Pavilion and the Honors Pavilion, the first two buildings in Elon’s new Academic Village, are scheduled to open with the start of the academic year. The buildings will provide student housing and faculty apartments, creating a living-learning environment. They will also include classrooms as well as a new outdoor amphitheatre. The existing brick wall surrounding the historic campus will be extended to enclose the AcademicVillage on the east side. |

Carlton renovation The fully renovated Carlton building at the center of the historic campus is the new home for the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies, El Centro de Espanol, a multi-media language media center and the departments of English and foreign languages. Construction was completed July 8 and the departments have moved in. |

Danieley Center residence halls Two new apartment buildings were completed July 31. Each of the buildings will house 32 students in eight four-bedroom, two-bath apartments. Each student will have a private bedroom and share a common living room and kitchen. An additional 80-bed, suite-style Danieley Center building was completed in April. |

Koury Center dance and weight room addition With a new addition now complete at Koury Center, work is under way to shift the fitness center to the new space and convert the old fitness center into a dance studio. The expanded facility is scheduled to open with the start of the academic year. |

Belk Track The new eight-lane all-weather track and field in the North Athletics Complex will be ready for fall competition. The surface is currently being prepared, and construction is scheduled to be completed by mid-August. The infield of the track will include a soccer practice field. Adjacent to the track, north of Rhodes Stadium, is a facility for the hammer throw. |

New parking north of McMichael Center The heavily-used parking lot at McMichael Center has been expanded, providing more parking spaces near Moseley Center. The project was completed in early July. |

Greenhouse Science students will take advantage of a new greenhouse that is being build adjacent to the McMichael Science Center. It will replace the old greenhouse that is located off Lebanon Avenue. The main part of the building will be completed in August with the greenhouse area ready for use Oct. 1. |

New business annex Three administrative offices have moved into a new business annex west of campus on Haggard Avenue built by a private party. Offices located in the new building are accounting, purchasing and human resources. The Office of Financial Planning has moved into the space vacated by accounting in the house next to Belk Library. Telecommunications and computer networking have moved into the former human resources office on the east end of Haggard Avenue. |

Alamance renovations The first floor suite formerly occupied by academic advising in Alamance building is being renovated as the new dean’s suite for Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences. The center rotunda and first-floor hallway of Alamance will also be refurbished as part of the project. The second and third floors of the building will be recarpeted and repainted. |

Duke building renovation The first-floor office of financial planning in Duke building is being transformed into a new home for academic advising. The academic advising office was temporarily located in Duke classrooms until the new space was ready in late July. |

Moseley Center changes Several spaces in Moseley Center will be modified this summer. The checkout lines in the Octagon Cafe will be moved to expand the space near the serving lines. The TV lounge and The Zone will also be changed to allow for upgraded services. Office spaces for minority affairs and the yearbook are being expanded on the second floor. |

Phoenix sculptures A Phoenix sculpture was installed on the top of the bell tower at Rhodes Stadium Aug. 9, and a larger version of the sculpture will be placed on a pedestal at the entrance to the North Athletics Complex in October. |

Haggard Avenue pedestrian safety project A project to slow traffic and increase pedestrian safety on Haggard Avenue has been postponed until the summer of 2003 due to technical restrictions imposed by the state. When the project is completed, a portion of Haggard Avenue will be narrowed and granite cobblestones will mark pedestrian crossing areas. |
