USA Today reporter visits Elon

USA Today higher education reporter Mary Beth Marklein spent May 2-3 working with students and meeting faculty and staff. Details...

During her visit, Marklein spoke at the spring Media Board banquet, met with student staff of the Pendulum and WSOE radio, answered questions in two journalism classes, toured campus and met with President Lambert and other administrators.

At USA Today, Marklein covers all aspects of the academic world. Her recent stories range from an analysis of the growing endowments at the nation’s richest colleges, to the increasing pressure some students feel to be admitted to a handful of Ivy League schools. She has tackled the controversial issue of SAT scores in college admissions and, last November, wrote about the National Survey of Student Engagement, which brought national recognition to Elon.

She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a master’s degree in public affairs from American University in Washington, where she is an adjunct faculty member in the journalism department.

Before joining USA Today full time as higher education reporter in 1997, Marklein was a freelance journalist, covering Washington for several publications, including The Baltimore Sun and San Francisco Chronicle.
