Thomas P. Mac Mahon, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Laboratory Corporation of America® Holdings (LabCorp), has been elected to the Elon University Board of Trustees.
Mac Mahon has served as LabCorp’s chief executive officer since 1997 and chairman since 1996. With headquarters near the Elon campus in Burlington, N.C., LabCorp is one of the world’s largest clinical laboratories, with revenues of approximately $3.3 billion and 24,000 employees. Under Mac Mahon’s leadership, LabCorp was recognized by Forbes Magazine in 2004 and 2005 as one of the best performing companies in the last five years.
Mac Mahon previously served as senior vice president of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. from 1993 to 1997. He also served as president of Roche Diagnostics Group and was a member of the executive committee of Hoffmann-La Roche from 1988 to 1996.
Mac Mahon played a pioneering role in commercializing the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, which has led to the rapid growth of molecular diagnostic testing for infectious disease, genetics and oncology.
A graduate of St. Peter’s College with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, Mac Mahon also earned an MBA in marketing from Fairleigh-Dickinson University.
