David Noer, the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership, published an op-ed column titled “Save the empire: Turn off the tube” in the Sunday, March 12 edition of the Greensboro News & Record.
Noer advocates civic engagement and critical reading skills in the column. He encourages parents to reduce the amount of time children spend watching television and to set a good example by becoming critical readers of newspapers and magazines. Noer says today’s children “are our future, and if we want a future of informed, responsible citizens and not illiterate, TV-conditioned zombies, we had better set an example and help them understand the importance of reading as a route to responsible citizenship.”
