Metzger to deliver Distinguished Scholar Lecture, performance April 18

Jon Metzger, Elon’s University Distinguished Scholar for 2005-2006, will present a lecture and perform some of his latest compositions during a presentation at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 18 in Yeager Recital Hall, located in the Center for the Arts on campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Metzger, associate professor of music and Artist-in-Residence, will direct a varied program including his latest compositions for baritone voice, piano and percussion ensemble. He will be assisted by Kenneth Lee, baritone; Charles Hogan, piano; and the Elon University Percussion Ensemble. During the second half of the program, well-known jazz pianist Ed Paolantonio will be featured together with Metzger on vibes.

Metzger has performed as a leader or featured soloist in national concert halls, including the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Institution. He has toured internationally, with stops in Africa, Central America, Jamaica, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Holland. Metzger has performed at well-known clubs such as Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., and The Blue Note in New York City and has performed with legendary artists Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton.

Metzger is the author of many scholarly works and has edited academic publications such as the Jazz Education Journal. His 1996 text, “The Art and Language of Jazz Vibes,” has been critically acclaimed as the leading work on methods in his field.

Established in 2000, Elon’s Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes a faculty member whose research has earned peer commendation and respect and who has made a significant contribution to his or her field of study.
