Almost 300 middle and high school students from 11 N.C. counties were on campus Wednesday, March 22 to participate in the Regional Envirothon, hosted by the Elon University Center for Environmental Studies. Envirothon is a competition focused on environmental knowledge. Winners from the regional event qualify to compete in the North Carolina Envirothon at Cedar Rock Park.
Throughout the morning, students attended workshops taught by environmental professionals on topics such as soils, water, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues. The Envirothon competition was held in the afternoon, simultaneously with a workshop for teachers on soil chemistry.
Janet MacFall, director of the Center for Environmental Studies, said this is the second year Elon has hosted the Regional Envirothon. A student who participated in last year’s event at Elon is now a freshman at the university, based in part on his experience at Envirothon.
