A new GST 313 seminar has been added to the fall schedule, and it won’t be like any course you’ve ever taken at Elon.
In this seminar we will explore how different societies have made sense of competing views about law, faith, and citizenship. Together we will read important texts on the history of ideas, focusing on specific moments in the past but with eye toward the contemporary world.
This class, however, will not be taught as a typical seminar. Instead, we will play two month-long “games” that are part of the experimental, award-winning Reacting to the Past project (see link below). In each game, every student will take on the role of a historical figure during a time of conflict. To win a game, a student must understand and apply ideas from core texts to persuade other students that a particular view of law, faith, and tolerance should prevail.
