Sullivan, who is a Distinguished University Professor and Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Philosophy, retires this spring following a 36-year career at Elon. He is a past recipient of the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching and has served as chair of Elon’s Carnegie Committee on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Sullivan was introduced to the board by President Leo M. Lambert, who said Sullivan is a “beloved” member of the community who has shaped Elon in numerous ways during his long career.

In historic remarks to the board, Sullivan said our world is at a turning point and Elon is preparing students to contribute real solutions for real issues. “We are not educating those given to our care for yesterday or even for today,” Sullivan said. “We are educating them for the future they will inherit and they will shape.”

Trustee Noel Allen thanked Sullivan on behalf of the board and said he personifies the caring faculty that has been an enduring characteristic of Elon.

Allen called Sullivan’s words and work at Elon “inspiring and prophetic.” Trustees gave Sullivan a standing ovation in tribute to his distinguished career.
