Jana Lynn Patterson, associate dean of students, presented a program for parents of all college and technical school bound seniors in Patrick County, Va., on May 2. The program, “A Parents Guide to the College Experience,” outlined developmental issues and practical tips for parents and students preparing to attend post secondary institutions in the fall. The program was sponsored by the Patrick County Education Foundation.
The Patrick County Education Foundation was founded in 2001 as an economic development initiative. The Foundation’s mission is driven by the belief that education is the key to a bright future and strong economy for Patrick County.
The Foudation has committed to take the steps needed to raise the education attainment levels of its citizens to rank amoung the top five rural counties in Virginia by the year 2011. The Patrick County Education Foundation is leading this ambitious and important undertaking and has developed a three-phase initiative to:
Increase the percentage of high school seniors who enroll in college,
Reduce by half the number of adults without a high school diploma, and
Expand and enhance the workforce training and skills and employment opportunities of Patrick County’s adult citizens.
The program was part of the Foundations’s College Access Program.
