A chapter written by Stephen Braye is contained in the new monograph, “Common Reading Programs: Going Beyond the Books.” The monograph is published by the National Resource Center for The First Year Experience & Students in Transition, University of South Carolina. Braye’s chapter details Elon’s process for selecting the common reading.
Braye, a professor of English and director of general studies, explains the step-by-step process of selection that Elon has undergone since starting the common reading program in 1992. Steps include the creation of a common reading committee, requirements and guidelines for the book and past criticism and scrutiny that the Elon common reading books have received.
“While common reading programs are about more than the book, the book in many ways defines the program,” Braye writes. “Selected books should be consistent with the college or university mission, the published criteria for selecting the book, and the overall project goals.”
Braye was among seven university professors chosen to write “Campus Cases” chapters that examine aspects of the common reading program at various colleges and universities.
The monograph was edited by Jodi Levine Laufgraben, associate vice provost and director of periodic program review at Temple University. “Common Reading Programs: Going Beyond the Books” was published in 2006.
