This is the second tournament bid at the NCAA Division I level for the Phoenix. Elon also qualified for postseason play in 2002, also at the Clemson regional.
Team members, along with fans, community members and media representatives, gathered at Cici’s Pizza in Burlington Monday to watch the live NCAA selection show on ESPN. Elon (44-16) set a school record for single season victories and won the Southern Conference regular season championship, its first since joining the league in 2003. The team finished the season winning 22 of its final 27 games and was ranked in Baseball America’s top 25 national poll for the first time ever on May 22.
Friday’s meeting between Elon and Mississippi State (35-21) will be the first between the schools. The Bulldogs, one of eight Southeastern Conference schools to qualify for the tournament, earned an at-large bid despite failing to qualify for the SEC conference tournament.
Clemson (47-14) is the number one national seed in the tournament after winning the ACC championship Sunday. The Tigers will face UNC Asheville (28-33) in a first round game at 7 p.m., Friday. The double-elimination regional will continue Saturday and Sunday, with a decisive game Monday, June 5 if necessary.
Regional winners will advance to one of eight super regionals, a best-of-three series to be held at on-campus sites June 9-12. The eight winners advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., June 16-26.
The national top eight seeds are Clemson (47-14), Rice (50-10), Texas (40-19), Alabama (41-19), Cal St. Fullerton (43-13), Nebraska (42-15), Georgia (41-19) and Georgia Tech (45-16).
