Elon University has placed 23 student-athletes on the 2006 TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference team for spring sports, as announced by the league’s office. Details...
The squad consists of student-athletes in the sports of baseball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. To qualify for a spot on the squad, an athlete – of at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her institution – must have participated in at least 50 percent of his/her team’s contests this spring while forging a 3.20 or better cumulative grade-point average entering the spring semester.
This is the fourth year that the Southern Conference has named an Academic All-SoCon Team by season. The squads are made possible by a grant from the conference’s Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
The Phoenix women’s outdoor track and field team placed 10 athletes on the squad – Sophomore accounting major Meghan Atkinson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), senior English major Alana Black (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake), junior political science major Angela Carlberg (Baltic, S.D./Washington), sophomore special education major Kelly Chencharik (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East), sophomore psychology and history double major Katelyn Ealer (Bear, Del./Middletown), sophomore chemistry major Grace Ilevbare (Ibadan, Oyo, Nigeria), sophomore business administration major Julie McGowan (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), sophomore exercise/sport science major Tara Mulcahy (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park), sophomore exercise/sport science major Jenny Pearce (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) and junior exercise/sport science major Amy Sulser (Natick, Mass./Natick).
Elon earned four spots each in softball and women’s tennis. Senior exercise/sport science major Nicole Ellis (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith), junior business administration major Paige Goss (Wellington, Fla./Olympic Heights), sophomore business administration major Carol Lilley (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) and sophomore exercise/sport science major Debbie Zeigler (Newton, Pa./Council Rock North) represent the Phoenix softball squad while junior elementary education major Alli Benton (Wilson, N.C./R.L. Fike), senior exercise/sport science major Kelly Fleck (Statesville, N.C./Statesville), senior business administration major Elizabeth Kernodle (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and sophomore business administration major Katie Nicholson (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) represent Elon in women’s tennis.
The Phoenix baseball team garnered three honorees – junior business administration major Ryan Addison (Marietta, Ga./Young Harris J.C.), senior business administration major Chris Price (Asheville, N.C./T.C. Roberson) and senior exercise/sport science major Ryan Radford (Asheville, N.C./Young Harris J.C.) while the Elon women’s golf squad registered two members – junior political science major Kelly Baytos (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy) and junior communications major Kristin Tremoulis (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic).
