New York Times features Elon in story on Southern universities

Elon University is among top Southern universities featured in the July 30 New York Times "Education Life" section. The story is titled "Southbound: Are Furman, Davidson and Elon the new Colby, Middlebury and Bates." Details…

The article by reporter Abigail Sullivan Moore is among several pieces in the special section that explore regional differences among colleges. A graphic lists Elon among the nation’s 59 most selective colleges and unversities that offer early decision admissions. Other North Carolina schools listed were Duke University, Davidson College and Wake Forest University. North Carolina is identified as one of nine “magnet” states, that attract more college students from out-of-state than they export (based on data from the U.S. Dept. of Education). For fall 2004, 16,716 out-of-state students came to North Carolina to study, while only 6,856 North Carolina students left the state to study elsewhere.

The “Southbound” story describes students from Northeastern states who are considering top universities in North and South Carolina. The article, which ran with two color photographs from the Elon campus, describes the beautiful buildings and grounds as well Elon’s weekly College Coffee gathering.

Moore noted Elon’s top rankings by college guidebooks and the increase in applications over the past decade.
