Case law books, law journals and many other publications are being placed on library shelves at the Elon University School of Law, which opens for its first academic year Aug. 10. Details...
The library, located on two floors in the H. Michael Weaver Building in downtown Greensboro, will open with about 18,000 hard copies on the shelves, says Mitch Counts, associate dean for library and information services. Students will also have electronic access to more than 155,000 volume equivalents.
Counts said smaller shipments of books will arrive this week, but the majority of the school’s opening collection is in place. Most of the books are arriving from noted legal publishers Thompson-West and the William S. Hein Co.
Counts said the library’s collection has the critical texts needed for the new law school and its students, including federal and state case law, statutory law, administrative law and treaties. The library also has law review journals from all North Carolina law schools and the nation’s top 10 law schools.
Students will have access to wireless Internet throughout the library. Furniture for the library’s computer lab will arrive this week and the lab will be operational for the start of classes.
Two new staff members will begin work Aug. 1 at the library, and a reference librarian will join the staff Aug. 14. Counts said the school also plans to hire an instructional technologies staff member in the coming weeks. When fully staffed, the library will employ 8 people, Counts said.
Approximately 100 students are expected to enroll in the law school’s first class. Students will participate in orientation activities beginning Thursday, Aug. 10, with the first day of classes set for Monday, Aug. 21.
