Elon’s all-female cheerleading squad participated in the National Cheerleading Association’s summer college camp in Myrtle Beach, SC on August 18-20. While there, squad members learned a fight song dance, band dances, cheers and chants as well as perfecting stunting techniques and learning new skills. Elon received three superior blue ribbons in fight song, cheer and chant divisions and also won the trophy for most improved squad. The girls received a bid to compete in the NCA Nationals competition, which is a high honor and a first for the program.
Some of the team members had this to say about the beginning of their season. “Camp was a very good experience for this team because we have 9 brand new girls on the squad to work into the mix.” said Kristin Souther. “We learned a lot at camp and I know this is going to be an awesome year for us.” added Joy Hartley. Kristin Smith said, “We have amazing talent on the squad this year and I can’t wait for the first game.” Souther, Hartley and Smith are the only three upperclassmen on the all-female squad and they are also tri-captains this year. Elon cheerleading coach Sandra Bays said, “This program is building momentum every year and attracting more talent than ever. We hope to continue this by adding some new members to the squad at our fall tryout.”
