Elon continues Katrina relief

KATRINA — ONE YEAR LATER

There are STILL 1.5 million people affected by the hurricane. More than 240,000 homes destroyed beyond repair. 18,000 jobs STILL remain lost. $81.5 billion in damages.

Elon’s commitment to help rebuild the community of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi will continue throughout this year.

Fall Break Service Trip: Service break trips are planned for the fall break, fake break, and possibly spring break. The deadline to sign-up for the fall break trip is this Friday, September 22 in the Kernodle Center for Service Learning, Moseley 230.

Mardi Gras Party at College Coffee. The College Coffee for next week, September 26, will have a Mardi Gras theme. Wear your Mardi Gras beads, crowns, and masks. Food will be provided for free, but everyone is invited to buy baked goods. Student organizations, classes, departments and individual students, faculty and staff are preparing baked goods (cookies, brownies, fudge, cake and pies) to sell. ARAMARK is donating a King Cake which will be auctioned. Elon’s Finest will perform and Creole music will be played. All proceeds from the bake sale and King Cake audition will go directly to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Either cash, checks or Phoenix Cash will be accepted on site at College Coffee. For each donation of $1, a strand of Mardi Gras beads will be given.

How you can help:

We still need home-made, baked goodies! Bring your baked goods to the kitchen on first floor Carlton before College Coffee so they can be priced and then placed on tables around Fonville Fountain. If you have time and would like to assist with the pricing and selling, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Donations are welcomed. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents may donate cash or send checks to the Office of the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, Alamance 109, 2188 Campus Box. You can also donate Phoenix Cash at the Phoenix Card Office in the Moseley Center at any time during business hours. Just this week, the family of an Elon student has pledged $5,000 for each year Elon sponsors service trips to Bay St. Louis. Today a faculty person donated $100 toward the bake sale. We hope to raise $3,000 at the bake sale and in donations within the next 30 days, toward a goal of $25,000 to buy supplies for Elon groups to fully restore at least one family’s home in Bay St. Louis this year.
