“Form in Translation: A Feminine Perspective on the Third Dimension” opens Sunday, Oct. 29 in the Frankie G. Weems Art Gallery in Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center. The show continues through Sunday, Dec. 3.
Elon faculty member Jan Chenoweth, adjunct assistant professor of fine arts, is featured in this exhibition, which includes over 30 sculptures by six women artists. In it, Lisa Pearce, Meredith College assistant professor of art, a sculptor and organizer of the exhibition, explores the question of whether there is an inherently feminine point of view or visual language that defines the difference between the sexes. Chenoweth and other featured artists Lynn Duryea, Kristin Gudjonsdottir, Ursula Goebels-Ellis, Holly Fischer and Ann Rowles work in a range of traditional as well as “non-traditional female media” such as ceramics, forged and welded steel, cast glass, paint and rubber.
Themes of childhood memories, sexuality, illnesses, both mental and physical, as well as current events are developed, giving a narrative content to the strong visual depth of the work. Indoor and outdoor pieces from intimate objects to large scale monolithic sculptures are featured in the show.
There will be an opening reception Sunday, Oct. 29 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. with a panel discussion at 3 p.m. by the exhibiting artists. Leisa Rundquist will be the moderator. Rundquist is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a part-time lecturer at North Carolina State University who specializes in modern and contemporary American art. Each artist will speak about the inspiration and conceptual basis of her work, and how she feels it is affected by her gender.
“Form in Translation: A Feminine Perspective on the Third Dimension” is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 2–5 p.m. The Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center is located on the western edge of the Meredith College campus, across from the Weatherspoon Gym.
