Are you applying to attend graduate school next fall? If so, you may want to consider applying for the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship. This generous award pays for tuition and expenses (up to $50,000) for up to six years of graduate study in various fields. The competition is stiff — the foundation awards approximately 30 scholarships and had approximately 1,000 applicants last year. Elon is permitted to nominate two students who can apply for this national competition. The selection criteria are as follows:
• 3.5 GPA or better
• academic ability and achievement
• unmet financial need
• will to succeed
• leadership and public service
• critical-thinking ability
• appreciation for or participation in arts and humanities
You can find more information about this opportunity at www.jackkentcooke.org (follow the Scholarship and Graduate links), including a new multimedia video called “What does it mean to be a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar?”
If you would like to apply to be one of Elon’s two nominees for this scholarship, you will need to submit the following:
1. a 1-2 page document briefly outlining how you meet each of the seven selection criteria
2. a resume or CV
3. the Narrative Autobiography that is part of the Cooke application
4. the names of two faculty members who can recommend you (or copies of their recommendations for your graduate school applications)
Nomination submissions are due to Dr. Janet Myers in Carlton 317 no later than Monday, November 20. A faculty committee will review these materials and select Elon’s nominees by early December, and nominees will have until early March to complete their applications.
