LSM students present checks to local groups

Students in a Leisure and Sport Management class presented checks to
Cummings High School and the N.C. Electric Wheelchair Hockey
Association (NCEWHA) during a lunch gathering Dec. 6 in the Stewart
Fitness Center on campus.

The class, taught by Associate Professor Hal Walker, is LSM 277,
Programming and Event Management. Students organized two events this
semester, with each event supporting a different agency.

One group of students organized “Kill the Plate,” an eating contest
held Nov. 19 at Sandy’s Subs in Elon to benefit Cummings High School in
Burlington. The restaurant contributed a percentage of its sale to the
effort, and students charged an entry fee for spectators and
participants in the contest. The event raised $500 for the high
school’s media center. Sharon Catlett, media services specialist at
Cummings, was on hand Wednesday to accept a check from the class.

Another group of students organized “Skillz on Wheelz,” a 3-on-3
wheelchair basketball game in Elon’s Alumni gym on Nov. 6. Through
sponsorships, donations, team and spectator fees, the group raised
$7,000 for NCEWHA. Jonathan Greeson, president and founder of the local
Carolina Fury team, was present Wednesday to accept the donation from
the class.

The $7,500 raised this semester sets a new mark for this service
learning class, which has raised approximately $17,000 over the past
four years for a variety of local agencies. The class gives students
practical experience in conceptualizing, planning and managing
professional events.
