Recycling contest kicks off at College Coffee

RecycleMania, a competition between U.S. colleges and universities, began on the Elon campus at a special College Coffee Tuesday, Feb. 6. Details...

RecyleMania is a 10-week recycling competition between colleges and universities throughout the U.S. that measures the amount of recylables collected on a per capita basis.

Campuswide participation is needed to help Elon reach its goal of increasing the amount of targeted materials that are recycled for this contest while reducing our overall waste stream. Targeted materials for the contest are glass, aluminum, plastics and cardboard.

Rather than throwing away that plastic bottle, soda can or glass bottle, find one of the green, two-hole-top recycling containers placed around campus.  While paper, magazines and newspaper are still an important part of Elon’s recycling program, these items will not be weighed as part of the RecycleMania contest.  Please continue to deposit paper products in the blue or blue lid containers. If you’re uncertain about whether a paper product might be recyclable, go ahead and toss it in a blue or blue lid recycling container. All items are sorted for non-recyclables.

During the RecycleMania competition, Elon will take measurements of the amount of cardboard, aluminum, glass and plastics that are turned in for recycling. Each week, the results will be posted on www.recyclemaniacs.org and http://org.elon.edu/recyclemania, so you can see how Elon stacks up against the competition. More than 100 U.S. colleges and universities are taking part in this year’s competition.

Throughout RecycleMania, look for trivia contests on E-Net, campus competitions between residence halls and organizations to see who can recycle the most, and other special events on campus.

Elon’s Residence Life Office is sponsoring a recycled art contest. Individuals or student teams should submit an application to participate in the art contest by 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 9 to their assistant area director. Submissions of artwork made out of recyclables will be judged Friday, March 2, with the winner announced on Monday, March 5. All completed projects will be eligible to win cash prizes.
