A fun time is in store for you this weekend if you like great singing and dancing and zany comedy. An “old-fashioned” musical comedy with lots of gags, gals and great songs can describe the 1980 Tony award winning “A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine,” which opened last night at McCrary Theatre.
An ingeniously constructed “musical double feature” tribute to Hollywood’s heyday, Act One’s “A Day In Hollywood” is set in the lobby of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre where a group of singing and tapping ushers pay homage to those marvelous 1930s films. Act Two’s “A Night in the Ukraine” is a zany parody of Chekov’s The Bear — as performed by the Marx Brothers!
Dick Vosburgh’s and Frank Lazarus’ original score with additional new music by Jerry Herman, is complemented by popular songs from the era like “Just Too Marvelous,” “Easy to Love,” and “Ain’t We Got Fun.” You’ll laugh a lot, for sure, and delight in the nostalgic songs and dances from this magnificent time in Hollywood history! Come and be entertained by Elon’s Performing Arts Department in this sweet remembrance of the early days of the film industry
