New York magazine writer and author Ariel Levy will discuss her first book, “Female Chauvinist Pigs,” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15 in Whitley Auditorium. Sponsored by General Studies and the Liberal Arts Forum, this event is free and open to the public.
Levy’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue, Slate, Men’s Journal, and Blender magazines. “Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture,” looks at the women’s liberation movement and how much of pop culture is creating a fake version of women’s empowerment. She argues that women’s complicity in raunch culture is not, as some would have it, empowering. Her presentation should be a fascinating discussion of gender, power, and sexuality in contemporary culture.
