As part of the Career Center’s Professional Discovery Week’s series of events, AAASE will sponsor a recruiting and career program titled, “Preparing to Serve Minority Populations.” The event takes place today, Thursday, February 15 in The Career Center located in Duke 101J from 4:00 – 5: 30 p.m.
Sowande’ Mustakeem ’00, the first Elon student to craft an independent major in African/African-American Studies, will be the keynote speaker. Mustakeem received an M.A. in African-American and African Studies at the Ohio State University. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in history at Michigan State. Her dissertation, “Ripples of Infinity: Gender, Health, and Violence in the Middle Passage 1721-1808″, conducts a social history of the slave ship experience during the legal slave trading period. The title of Miss Mustakeem’s lecture is “Inspiring the Minds, Commemorating the Times: Generational Responsibility & the Lingering Importance of Black Studies.”
Elon students attending the event will also benefit from the expertise of the other invited panelists, whose careers have brought them into contact with minority/multicultural populations. Jim Allison of the Career Center will offer students important preparation tips for the job & internship opportunities the program provided. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
