Elon Students for Peace and Justice are hosting a mock refugee camp near the west entrance to Moseley Center Thursday-Friday, March 1-2, highlighting the plight of refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The Elon students are supporting the work of a national organization, STAND (Students Taking Action Now in Darfur), which is holding a week of action to increase awareness about Darfur among college students.
The mock camp includes drawings by Sudanese children caught in the conflict, quotes from the children, and photos from the region. Sophomore Judy Ruiz and freshman Sara Riley said Elon Students for Peace and Justice will host tours of the refugee camp at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Friday, March 2. The tours provide an opportunity to educate others about the history of the conflict, which has killed more than 450,000 people and displaced 2.5 million others.
