A monthly column by David Noer, the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business
Leadership, appeared in the Sunday, March 4 edition of the Greensboro News & Record. Noer’s column focused on four things worth getting angry about:
• We are subsidizing organizations like HondaJet to move to our area and need to be concentrating on developing a workforce that attracts businesses without artificial incentives.
• We are planning on spending $108 million for a new jail and concurrently shutting down mental health services that are putting our mentally ill on the street.
• We are considering funding that new jail in a way that gets around the normal process of asking approval from voters. This subverts the democratic process.
• We are paying our teachers just over $45,000 per year, while the average salaries of professional athletes and elite coaches are such that they make more in a year than a teacher makes in a lifetime.
