The North Carolina Court of Appeals heard three cases on March 15 in its first session at the Elon University School of Law. Details...
The court heard arguments from attorneys in the school’s Robert E. Long Courtroom, which also serves as the home of the North Carolina Business Court. The Court of Appeals held its session at the invitation of Elon Law Dean Leary Davis. The appeals court is headquartered in Raleigh, but occasionally conducts its hearings at law schools in the state.
Judges hearing the three cases included Chief Judge John Martin, Judge Rick Elmore, Judge Linda McGee and Judge Linda Stephens. Attorneys in each case were given 30 minutes to make their oral arguments.
Some law students were in the courtroom to observe the hearings, while others watched on the school’s closed-circuit television system in a classroom. 
The courtroom includes a sophisticated video and audio system that includes several cameras and microphones. Following the first case, Distinguished Jurist in Residence James Exum, along with faculty member Steven Friedland and associate dean Alan Woodlief, discussed the proceedings with students and answered their questions.
Later in the day, the judges attended a luncheon with students and held a panel discussion prior to the Thursday Afternoon Tea.
