International Law Society to host immigration seminar, April 19

The Elon University International Law Society will sponsor a seminar titled Immigration 101 from 3:30 to 4:35 p.m., Thursday, April 19.  The seminar, which will be held at the Elon School of Law, room 204, will be led by local immigration attorneys Laura Deddish Burton, Jeremy McKinney, and David Long. The speakers will present a brief overview of immigration law, including nonimmigrant and immigrant visas, permanent residency, citizenship, and potential reform. Previously included in a Greensboro Bar Association seminar, Immigration 101 is also being offered to local attorneys for CLE credit.

Immigration 101 Speakers:

Laura Deddish Burton is an attorney with Smith Moore LLP in its Greensboro, NC, office.  She is a Certified Specialist in immigration law.  Her practice focuses predominantly on immigration and international law.  She counsels a variety of companies and individuals regarding all aspects of their business immigration needs, including inbound and outbound employee transfer, employment- and family-based immigrant and non-immigrant visas, consular contacts, and I-9 issues.  Admitted to bar: 1997, North Carolina.  Education:  B.A., cum laude, Duke University; J.D., University of Virginia School of Law.  Member: American Immigration Lawyers Association; Vice Chair, International Law Section Council, North Carolina Bar Association; Member, International and Litigation Sections and Immigration Committee, North Carolina Bar Association; Member, Immigration Specialist Committee, North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization; Past President, French-American Chamber of Commerce of North Carolina, Inc.; Committee Chair, Women’s Professional Forum. Jeremy L. McKinney practices exclusively in the area of Immigration and Naturalization and is a North Carolina Board Certified Immigration Law Specialist.  He has previously litigated Immigration matters before the Board of Immigration Appeals, USCIS Administrative Appeals Office, Federal District Courts in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, and Courts of Appeal in Richmond, Va., Atlanta, and Chicago. Mr. McKinney is the current Vice Chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association Carolinas Chapter, and is a member of the North Carolina State Bar’s Specialization Committee.  His Bar Admissions include the United States Supreme Court, United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Seventh, and Eleventh Circuits, and the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina  Mr. McKinney graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1993 and later recevied his J.D. from Campbell University School of Law in 1996.  He is a former Captain and Judge Advocate in the North Carolina Army National Guard, and served in the Middle East in connection with the war in Iraq in 2003.   His notable cases include Soumahoro v. Gonzales, 415 F.3d 732 (7th Cir. 2005), Matter of Balde, A77-560-484 (BIA 2005), Ntuen v. Ashcroft, Case No. 6:02-CV-40 (M.D.Ga 2003), Valencia v. INS, Case No. 1:99CV00628 (M.D.N.C. 1999), Parker v. Johnny Tart Enterprises, 104 F. Supp. 2d 581 (M.D.N.C. 1999).

David J. Long founded Long, Chang & Associates, L.L.P. in 1998. He has been recognized by the North Carolina State Bar as a Board-Certified Specialist in Immigration Law. Mr. Long is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the North Carolina State Bar. Mr. Long serves as a Mentor for other immigration attorneys through AILA.  Prior to founding Long, Chang & Associates, L.L.P., Mr. Long worked as an attorney with the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton in Winston-Salem. Mr. Long practices in the areas of immigration law, corporate law and real estate.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Long attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied in the Honors Program and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. In addition, Mr. Long studied the Korean Language at Duke University for a semester while attending UNC-CH. Mr. Long graduated magna cum laude and in the top 1% of his class.  Mr. Long graduated with highest honors and received his J.D. (law) degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law. During law school, Mr. Long was selected as a member of the Law Review based on his academic standing. He was one of three members on the school’s nationally-recognized Gabrielli Family Law Moot Court Team. Mr. Long also studied Labor and Employment Law at the law school’s summer program in Italy.

Following law school, Mr. Long worked as an attorney in the commercial real estate department of Kilpatrick Stockton LLP in Winston-Salem, NC, one of largest law firms in the United States. After two years of working at a large law firm, Mr. Long desired the opportunity to assist clients on a more personal basis. As a result, he joined Ms. Chang in forming Long, Chang & Associates, L.L.P. Most recently, Mr. Long served as an adjunct faculty member at Handong International Law School in Pohang, South Korea where he taught U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Law.
