Elon showed steady progress each week during RecycleMania 2007, a 10-week competition to reduce waste and raise awareness about recycling. The contest ended last week. Details...
In the Per Capita division, Elon finished in 74th place out of 175 schools nationally. After the competition’s first week, Elon had collected a weight volume of 6,090 pounds. By the eighth week, the university had collected more than 14,600 pounds of recyclable product in a one-week period.
Overall, Elon collected 47 tons of recyclable material during the contest. Internal contests, organized by Residence Life and Greek Life, were instrumental in the success of the contest. More than 13,000 pounds of aluminum, plastic and glass were collected through an area contest held by Res. Life and a five-team contest between Greek Life organizations. This helped Elon finish 26th nationally out 112 schools in the Targeted Materials-Aluminum, Plastic and Glass division, and first among North Carolina schools in that category.
In the Targeted Materials-Cardboard category, Elon finished 41st out of 104 schools.
