The main focus was on art and literature at the unveiling of the 58th volume of Colonnades, Elon’s art and literary journal, on Wednesday night. Students and faculty gathered at the amphitheater in the Academic Village to get their own copies of the journal as well as to hear students reading selections from their published works. Concluding the event was a reading by Jennifer Grotz, author of Cusp (Houghton Mifflin, 2003), which received both the Bakeless Prize for Poetry and the Best First Book of Poetry Award from the Texas Institute of Letters.
Grace Dow, editor-in-chief of this year’s edition of Colonnades, had this to say about the journal: “Working with Colonnades is such an interesting experience because it involves bringing together three distinct groups of people: the contributors who created the pieces you see in the journal, the staffs and editors who put in hours of work to help bring these pieces together into a finished whole, and the general public—the people who get to read and enjoy these works long afterward. All three of these groups are essential to helping promote student art and literature on Elon’s campus.”
Anyone who was unable to attend the unveiling event is encouraged to stop by the Colonnades table at College Coffee this coming Tuesday, May 1. Copies of Colonnades are also available outside the Colonnades office in Whitley 201, on the third floor of Carlton building, next to the check-out desk at Belk Library, or by written request at colonnades@elon.edu.
