The 2010 Periclean Scholars engage in research, outreach, education, and fundraising to support socio-economic development in Ghana and awareness of the country and its people. The group is advised by Associate Professor of Geography, Dr. Heidi Frontani, whose area of expertise is Africa.
The 2010 Periclean Scholars’ initial campaign involves educating the Elon community and beyond about the difficulties faced by rural Ghanaian communities in obtaining access to health care. As part of this initial campaign the 2010 Periclean Scholars are partnering with the people of Kpoeta, Ghana to build a rural health center in Kpoeta and co-sponsoring two campus events in early May: a talk by Dr. Jane Stephens on AIDS in Africa and a talk and cooking demonstration by Ghanaian Cecilia Agbo-Amedahe.
