Students honored during Black Excellence Awards Banquet

The
Black Excellence Awards Banquet celebrates the academic success of
full-time black students at Elon and serves as an inspiration to all
black students to excel academically.

More than 90 students received awards for a 2006 fall semester GPA
of 3.2 or higher, or a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Special plaques
were presented to the following students for having the highest grades:

• Freshman female with highest GPA – Brittany Byrd
• Freshman male w/ highest GPA – Ahren Hoy
• Sophomore female w/ highest GPA – Miya Stodghill
• Sophomore male w/ highest GPA – Erick Brown
• Junior female w/ highest GPA – Jessica Young
• Junior male w/ highest GPA – Dwayne Waite
• Senior female w/ highest GPA – Eden Esters
• Senior male w/ highest GPA – Michael Brandon

• Female Athlete with the highest GPA – Grace Ilevbare
• Male Athlete with the highest GPA – Jonathan Ogolo

• Alumni Gift – Durice White

• Phi Beta Sigma Book Award – Brandon Helton

• Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Textbook Award – Brittany Feimster

    Candyce Marsh ’04, a successful drag racer who owns and operates her own racing company, was the keynote speaker. Provost Gerry Francis delivered opening remarks and L’Tanya Richmond, director of multicultural affairs, gave the charge to the students.

    The Board of Trustees approved naming the banquet the
    Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Awards banquet last year in honor of Glenda
    Phillips, the first black student to attend Elon in 1963, and Eugene
    Perry, the first black student to graduate from Elon in 1969. The new
    banquet name was officially adopted during this year’s event.
